Browsing Posts in Social Media

There is a good chance crawlers are looking for Twitter handles while they are out and about.  We already know the search engines utilize social information and signals in their index.  For example, you can see this information in Google’s “Realtime” vertical.  If you are interested in seeing a live example check out this realtime feed of #smx.

Of particular interest today, and the reason I write this blog post, I had Google actually suggest a URL to me today inside the Google Suggest portion of the Google Toolbar.  The URL that was suggested was one Google claimed was on the topic I was typing in the box and was a URL shared by one of the handles I am following on Twitter.

I tried to grab a screen shot of this Google Suggest feature in action, but I was too late.  It was removed before I got the chance.  Regardless, the social side of the web is blending rapidly with regular search.  Make sure you have your bases covered.  Utilize social with your SEO efforts.

And make sure you have your Twitter accounts available for the crawlers.  Even if it’s only the spam bots.  icon smile Is Google Suggesting URLs Based on Tweets?

I just want to take a quick minute and give you an idea of how much traffic Twitter can produce. We have seen during our testing that Twitter will send 3 – 4 visits per link for every 1,000 followers in you account. This only speaks to the quantity of traffic, not the quality. In terms of quality, the traffic is not that great. We see very little activity from this traffic and see most of these visitors as “just looking”. While the volume is good we would still like to see better quality.

Other notes:

I have not mentioned the quality of the followers. Most of these test accounts contain a random cross-section of the Twitter population. You can imagine, there are ways to do a better job of building a quality list of followers.

We have also done testing around specific days of the week and specific times of the day. The purpose was to determine the optimal days and times for messaging. I am happy to share that information if you are interested, but I can tell you it varies by industry or vertical. It also varies by message theme. Leave a comment if you are interested in more.

Scale:

Remember you can scale with multiple Twitter accounts. You can also scale with the tweet frequency. Where there is a will there is a way.

Happy tweeting!

There is some good information in an article I just found on Twitter (go figure).  The article provides some quick summaries of different stories all related to Twitter and how people are having success with the platform.

How can you make money on Twitter?

Should you sell your tweets?  For how much?

Should you pay for Twitter followers?

What are some good tools to leverage for Twitter?

Take a look at the attached article and you will be on your way to the answers to some of these questions.

cityville CityVille Hits 100 Million Active UsersHoly Cow!  CityVille now has 100 million active users per month.  As many of you may already know, CityVille is another Zynga game that runs on Facebook.  You may be more familiar with FarmVille, but from the looks of these numbers I am guessing you have heard of CityVille as well.

My only question here is where do these people work?  OK, I have more than one.  What do these people do?  How is it they have so much time?  Are they playing these games at work?  Why don’t they just make friends?

Well congratulations to Zynga on another major milestone reached.  To all of you playing CityVille, get back to work!
